Well, I'm really unsatisfied with this one, but I guess I should just stop fiddling with it and call it done. I guess the biggest problem I have with it is the composition.. like the tree and the girl are fighting to be the focal point.. I dunno how else to do it though, so I give up :b Anyway, the whole thing was inspired by my girlfriend's Japanese dance lessons, except they don't kill trees. I found it inspiring because the movements they make are very slow and graceful, yet there's quite a bit of power and control behind them. So anyway I had this kind of cliché idea of having a line coming directly out from her fan destroying something (the hidden power!!), probably a tree, but I couldnt decide on what kind of environment to stick it in. I guess I settled with snow because it's easier to do
On the technical side, I had quite a bit of trouble messing with cloth simulations until I got anything vaguely useable, even just for a still frame. Other problems abounded when I wanted to combine shag:hair (which I used for her..hair) with brazil's skylight and indirect illumination. So I ended up doing a lot of painting and compositing and general messing around in Photoshop until I got something close to what I wanted (so what else is new).
As for the title, it comes from a really pretty song from the Rurouni Kenshin oav soundtrack that I listened to a bit while working on the snowy environment.
Great work!
I can see what you mean about the focal point being wierd. There is alot of empty space between her and the tree. Everything looks awesome, the frozen grass, the hair, clothes, and i like how there isnt a line or anything going from the fan to the tree. Keep up the great work!
wow...she cut that tree down eh? heh, that's impressive! Great depth in this image...and the snowy atmosphere is great mixed with the japanese komono wearing girl...very cool
it looks really good, but yeah that big ass black on the right side throws the balance off. the rest is really monotone, and then she is so much darker then anything else. still looks reall y good.
I see what you mean about the focal point. Infact if you were to cut the piece in half you would have two very interesting pieces. But the piece is very beautiful. I love the detail in it and the Japanese girl's movement, the way her hair is in mid sway. Very very nice.

I absolutely love the appearance of the snowy landscape- simply incredible work.
I actually like the fact that both the tree and the figure compete for the eyes attention- it helps to tie them together in a particular relationship, which is good considering that I might otherwise wonder what the heck happened to that tree over there.
